03:19 pm - Great Explorations to Host Programs at Clearwater Main Library Join the Clearwater Main Library for a series of programs presented by Great Explorations, The Children’s Museum. Geared toward students in grades 3 through 5, the first program, Once Upon A Time, will be Saturday, March 15 at 2 p.m. Stories will be told in an atmosphere of wonder, excitement and surprise. On April 12 at 2 p.m., children will learn what it takes to be a performer as they go through a training session called Acting 4 U Performing Arts. The last program, Kid Kemistry, is May 17 at 2 p.m. This scientific presentation teaches the difference between substance and solution. Great Explorations, The Children’s Museum, is located in St. Petersburg. All programs are free.

12:34 pm - Clearwater Main Library Hosts Scholar’s Choice Lecture Series The Scholar’s Choice Lecture and Discussion Series returns with An Old Man’s Love by Anthony Trollope, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2 p.m. at the Clearwater Main Library. Dr. Nancy Jane Tyson from the Department of English at the University of South Florida will lead the lecture.
The lecture and discussion series continues with Candide by Voltaire, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2 p.m., with Dr. Maryhelen Harmon; On God: An Uncommon Conversation by Norman Mailer Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2 p.m., with Dr. Phillip Sipiora.
Limited copies of the books are available in advance of each lecture at the Clearwater Main Library. The Scholar’s Choice Lecture and Discussion Series explores literary classics as well as popular works. Brochures on the lecture series are available at all Clearwater Public Library System locations.

On the menu: Hot Crab and Artichoke Dip; Smoked Salmon Mousse; and Chocolate Cherry Truffles. 02:11 pm - Sherrill Milnes Week, Oct. 22 – 25, at the Clearwater Main Library The Clearwater Main Library and the Pinellas Opera League will host three exciting opera programs surrounding legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes. - Opera enthusiast Middy Larson will host a one-hour retrospective of Mr. Milnes’ career, Mon., Oct. 22, 2 p.m. This lecture will include video from his performances. - Opera Rocks, a ten-week lecture series at the library hosted by Dr. Michael Blauner, will feature Giuseppe Verdi's opera Macbeth with Milnes starring in the title role, Wed., Oct. 24, noon. - An Afternoon with Sherrill Milnes will take place Thurs., Oct. 25, 2 p.m. The renowned opera star will talk about his career, which includes countless performances with two fellow giants of the opera world, the late soprano Beverly Sills and tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Copies of his newly released and revised autobiography, American Aria...Encore will be available for sale and signing. A five-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner, Sherrill Milnes was a leading baritone at the Metropolitan Opera for 32 years and is recognized as the leading Verdi baritone worldwide of his generation. Milnes conquered the opera major houses of the world including the Met, London's Covent Garden, LaScala, Paris, Vienna, Barcelona, Munich, Salzburg, Buenos Aires, Hamburg and Moscow's Bolshoi. Since retirement from the stage his teaching career has taken him from Toronto to Tel Aviv, Italy, and Finland. In addition, Milnes has done Master Classes at Juilliard, the Manhattan School of Music in New York, and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Currently, he is artistic director for VoicExperience, a unique training program that offers performance and study opportunities for singers in the Tampa Bay area and throughout the United States. Milnes is also artistic advisor to Opera Tampa, which is affiliated with the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. Distinguished Poet to Kick off Poetry Series at Clearwater Main Library Poet Peter Meinke will kick off Clearwater Public Library System’s poetry series with a poetry reading and book signing Thursday, Sept 20 at 7 p.m. at the Clearwater Main Library. Peter Meinke has published 15 books of poems, seven in the prestigious Pitt Poetry Series, the most recent being The Contracted World in 2006. His poetry has received many awards, and his book of short stories, The Piano Tuner, won the 1986 Flannery O’Connor Award. He directed the Writing Workshop at Eckerd College for 27 years, and has often been writer-in-residence at other colleges and universities. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, and dozens of other magazines. He and his wife, artist Jeanne Clark, have lived in St. Petersburg since 1966. In the spring of 2008 he’ll be “Distinguished Poet-in-Residence” at Wichita State University, Wichita, KS. Donna Dewberry is an American artist and author who developed the One Stroke painting technique. She has written more than 70 books and is also a columnist in a variety of magazines. 02:17 pm - Author to Visit Clearwater Main Library Author Lynn Marie Smith will discuss her book, Rolling Away: My Agony with Ecstasy, and will lecture on the dangers of drug abuse and addiction Monday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Clearwater Main Library, 100 N. Osceola Ave.
Smith grew up in a small, rural town in Pennsylvania, and then moved to New York City to pursue her dream of acting. In the city she discovered new people, ideas and the drug that almost ruined her life, ecstasy. Rolling Away documents her path to addiction and the struggle to put her life back together and survive.
Smith has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, MTV’s True Life and is a member of the advisory board for the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. This lecture is for teens and adults ages 14 and up.

Mark “the Balloon Guy” Byrne was named "Most Original Performer" by the International Brotherhood of Magicians in the Strolling Olympics. Mark is a world-class balloon twister and each creation is individually sculpted to fit people's personalities.

11:22 am - Rock and Roll Concert at Main Library It’s been a high-energy summer at all Clearwater Libraries and what better way to end the season than with a rock show. Last year the quirky, carefree, music of Detroit's The High Strung (or their myspace) electrified patrons across the nation with their Beatlesque jams. This year the band is roaming the country again and headed to the Clearwater Main Library. on Monday, August 6, 2 p.m.
The High Strung will play a full-set and will solicit the audience's help in writing and improvising a song on the spot. The band will also record the library show and burn a copy on CD for each participating library.
The High Strung were hailed by Rolling Stone magazine, NPR, and the Washington Post. Their videos have been on MTV and they have been featured in Entertainment Weekly and Spin magazines. .

04:00 pm - Celebrate Beach Library’s 46th Birthday To celebrate the 46th birthday of the Clearwater Beach Library, Anne Garris will present a program, “Growing Up Free on Clearwater Beach” on Wednesday, July 25, 7 p.m., at the Clearwater Beach Library, 483 Mandalay Ave. The library is normally closed at this time and it will be open only for this program. Refreshments provided.
Garris, a lifelong resident of Clearwater Beach, will speak about the history of the area, what it was like growing up here, and how it has changed. On July 19, 1961, the Clearwater Beach Library opened.

Award-winning singer/songwriter, Shana Banana, will perform at Clearwater libraries to kick-off the summer programs: Shana Banana’s shows and songs encompass a variety of themes, including reading, movement, imagination, the ocean, the environment, and acceptance of others. She presents songs and stories from other cultures, from Japanese to Caribbean to American Indian, and encourages kids to learn simple foreign language words and numbers. Shana has earned Parents' Choice and NAPPA awards, Kids First! endorsement, 2000-2001 nominations for Campus Activities Family and Children's Entertainer of the Year, and an invitation to perform at the White House. Upcoming Spanish programs at Clearwater libraries are as follows: Celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), by attending Boca Beth, an interactive children's class with music, puppets, movement, creativity, and props that teach basic Spanish to English-speaking children, ages 4-8. The celebration is Wednesday, April 25, 10 a.m. at East Library. Call (727) 669-1280 for more information. El día de los niños/El día de los libros is a celebration of children, families, and reading held annually on April 30 and emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. For tips on how to stay alert of these crimes, attend Senior Alert, a 2-hour program on Tuesday, April 17, 2 p.m. at Countryside Library.

The Clearwater Public Library System is celebrating National Library Week with the following youth and teen activities:- Boca Beth, an interactive children's class with music, movement and props for Spanish-English education, Wednesday, April 18, 10 a.m. at Countryside Library, and Wednesday, April 25, 10 a.m. at East Library

The Great Books Foundation is an independent, nonprofit educational organization with a mission to help people think and share ideas. The Foundation was established in 1947 to promote liberal education for the general public and extended its mission to children with the introduction of Junior Great Books.
