01:09 pm - Learn About the Civil Rights Movement at Clearwater’s North Greenwood Library Dr. Lorraine Mayfield-Brown will give an interactive presentation for all ages about the civil rights movement Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. at the North Greenwood Library.
The presentation is being held in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It will focus on the civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s, which broke the pattern of racial discrimination and segregation of African Americans through non-violent protest.

12:39 pm - Clearwater’s North Greenwood Library Celebrates Five Years Help Clearwater’s North Greenwood Library celebrate five years in the current library building Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. North Greenwood Library’s fifth birthday party is an opportunity to get the community together and celebrate. There will be cake, crafts, and a storyteller.
The first library in the North Greenwood area opened in April 1950 in a storefront on Pennsylvania Avenue and Cedar Street. The library housed only 5,000 books at that time. In September 1962 the library relocated to 1250 Palmetto St. and was named the Northeast Branch Library. In 1983 it became the North Greenwood Library, and in 1986, was renovated and expanded. The groundbreaking for the new North Greenwood Branch Library building was held at its current location in October 2001. The grand opening took place on Jan. 18, 2003.

12:32 pm - Clearwater’s North Greenwood Library Offers AARP Driver Safety Class The North Greenwood Library is hosting a two-part AARP Driver Safety Class on Wednesday, Jan. 9 and Friday, Jan. 11 from 1 – 5 p.m. each day.
This 8-hour classroom refresher course is designed for drivers ages 50 and up. The class is divided into two four-hour sessions. Auto insurance rates may decrease with discounts after this course is taken.
AARP will collect a $10 fee. To register, call the North Greenwood Library at (727) 462-6895.

Distinguished Poet to Kick off Poetry Series at Clearwater Main Library Poet Peter Meinke will kick off Clearwater Public Library System’s poetry series with a poetry reading and book signing Thursday, Sept 20 at 7 p.m. at the Clearwater Main Library. Peter Meinke has published 15 books of poems, seven in the prestigious Pitt Poetry Series, the most recent being The Contracted World in 2006. His poetry has received many awards, and his book of short stories, The Piano Tuner, won the 1986 Flannery O’Connor Award. He directed the Writing Workshop at Eckerd College for 27 years, and has often been writer-in-residence at other colleges and universities. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, and dozens of other magazines. He and his wife, artist Jeanne Clark, have lived in St. Petersburg since 1966. In the spring of 2008 he’ll be “Distinguished Poet-in-Residence” at Wichita State University, Wichita, KS. Materials will be provided. Learn the basics of Donna Dewberry's famous brush strokes from certified instructor Debbie Worcester. Donna Dewberry is an American artist and author who developed the One Stroke painting technique. She has written more than 70 books and is also a columnist in a variety of magazines.
