09:08 am - Weaving Class for Kids at the Library

As part of the summer reading program, children ages 8 and up are invited to attend a weaving class at the Clearwater Main Library, July 18 at 2 p.m., using foam meat trays as looms.

Children will learn to weave with yarn. The free class will be instructed by artist Sarah Butz and is limited to 20 students.

01:49 pm - Clearwater Main Library to Host Children’s Banner Exhibit Reception
A reception to celebrate The Children’s Banner Exhibit at the Clearwater Main Library, will take place Monday, June 2, 6 - 7:30 p.m. The exhibit of textile inspired banners made by area children will be on display June 1 - Aug. 26 in the Osceola, Carnegie, and Youth Services galleries. 
Children created two-by-five foot banners, using textiles and techniques such as weaving, felting, dyeing, and sewing. The exhibit will be on display as part of Convergence 2008, an international fiber arts conference being held at the Tampa Convention Center. Youth interested in learning more about this art can attend a foam tray weaving class at the Main Library July 18, 2 p.m.
As part of this summer’s art exhibits, the Pinellas Handweavers Guild will be displaying Creative Hands Connecting Lives in the first floor lobby display cases. The Youth Arts Corp will also be in attendance to talk about their upcoming exhibit.
Additional children’s banners may be viewed during the summer months at the City of Clearwater Municipal Services Building. For more information, call 562-4970, ext. 5284.

Children can learn about the life of Ben Franklin and how to make reading more fun at Clearwater Main Library, Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m.

Dr. Rich Davis travels the U.S. with his world-class program titled The Magic of Reading with Ben Franklin. His educational assembly program will delight children in grades kindergarten through 8th, as well as adults. Children will learn about Benjamin Franklin, his life, his achievements, and his love of reading.

Kids, ages 8 – 12, can join Publix Apron’s Cooking School Chef Bil Mitchell as he hosts a cooking demo with a Transformers theme, Thursday, June 14, 12 p.m. at the Clearwater Main Library. Limited to 25 participants.

It’s time to keep your kids and teens actively learning this summer. The Clearwater libraries offer many options to keep their minds active during June and July.

Highlighted programs for kids during June include:

  • Cartooning Party: Learn how to draw cartoons with Leah Lopez at East Library, Monday, June 11, 1 p.m.
  • Didgeridoo Down Under: Watch an Australian-themed show with music, art, storytelling, dancing, puppetry, comedy, and environmental education at Main Library, Monday, June 11, 2 p.m.
  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium: Touch and see live sea animals and artifacts at Countryside Library, Tuesday, June 12, 2 p.m.; North Greenwood Library, Wednesday, June 27, 11 a.m.
  • Mad Science Experiments: Help out with science-themed experiments at North Greenwood Library, Wednesday, June 13, 11 a.m.
  • Publix Kids Cooking: (Ages 8-12), Chef Bil Mitchell hosts a cooking demo with a Transformers theme at Main Library, Thursday, June 14, 12 p.m.

  • Abrakadoodle Art: Design like book author and illustrator, Eric Carle, at East Library, Thursday, June 28, 2 p.m. (Ages 6-12).

Highlighted programs for teens during June include:

  • Teen News Crew: Be a reporter and writer, and help create a newsletter at Main Library, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 2 p.m.
  • Video Gaming: Play video games on large screens at North Greenwood Library, Thursday, June 7, 21, 4 p.m.; East Library, Saturday, June 16, 1 p.m.; Countryside Library, Saturday, June 9, 1 p.m.; Main Library, Thursday, June 14, 6 p.m.
  • Anime & Manga Club: Cartoonist, Leah Lopez, teaches teens to draw Anime on June 11, 1 p.m. Watch Anime movies on June 25, 1 p.m. at East Library.
  • Manga Art Contest: Entries will be accepted June 4 – July 27. Pick-up and drop-off entry at any Clearwater library.


Clearwater libraries offer an unlimited amount of programs with a variety of themes, including puppet shows, story times, ventriloquism, music, juggling, book clubs, and chalk drawing. 11:29 am - Shana Banana Entertains @ Clearwater Libraries

Award-winning singer/songwriter, Shana Banana, will perform at Clearwater libraries to kick-off the summer programs:

Shana Banana’s shows and songs encompass a variety of themes, including reading, movement, imagination, the ocean, the environment, and acceptance of others. She presents songs and stories from other cultures, from Japanese to Caribbean to American Indian, and encourages kids to learn simple foreign language words and numbers. Shana has earned Parents' Choice and NAPPA awards, Kids First! endorsement, 2000-2001 nominations for Campus Activities Family and Children's Entertainer of the Year, and an invitation to perform at the White House.

10:48 am - Come Together @ Your Library: Celebrate National Library Week April 15-21
National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in schools, campuses and communities nationwide. The Clearwater Public Library System is celebrating National Library Week with the following youth and teen activities:
  • Boca Beth, an interactive children's class with music, movement and props for Spanish-English education, Wednesday, April 18, 10 a.m. at Countryside Library, and Wednesday, April 25, 10 a.m. at East Library
  • Cartooning Workshop, ages 4 and up learn how to draw cartoons with Leah Lopez, Tuesday, April 17, 7 p.m. at Countryside Library, and Saturday, April 21, 2 p.m. at East Library
  • Video Gaming Night, play video games on large projectors for gaming consoles such as Xbox, Wii, Playstation and Gamecube, Thursday, April 19, 6 p.m. at Main Library. Bring a controller (if you have one).

"Everyday, libraries in big cities and small towns, colleges and universities, in schools and in businesses help transform their communities," says Barbara Pickell, Library Director. "At our library, people of all backgrounds can come together for community meetings, lectures and programs, to do research with the assistance of a trained professional, to get a job or to find homework help."

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

10:15 am - Cartooning Party at Clearwater Libraries
Kids, ages 4 and up, can learn how to draw cartoons with Leah Lopez at Clearwater libraries. Art supplies will be provided. No registration necessary.

Since art has been taken out of the curriculum at many schools, Leah's Cartooning Parties, Inc. helps keep the arts alive. This unique, educational, and fun workshop helps children discover talent within them. With Leah's step-by-step instruction, kids learn just how easy it is to create their own cartoons. She has won numerous awards for her fine art in the state of Florida.
